Subir Kumar Mukhopadhyay graduated as M. Tech, Mining Eng. in the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur in 1990, in 2006 he received his PH.D. in mining engineering at the same institute. He obtained S.C.C. and F.C.C. (Second and First Class Mine Managers’ Certificate of Competency) for Metalliferous Mines (Unrestricted) from D.G.M.S., Dhanbad and also possesses the Mine Surveyors’ (Coal) certificate of competency.

He has a wide experience as practicing engineer and academician. Apart from teaching, and research in Mine Planning and Design, Metal Mining (surface and underground), Mine and Mineral Economics, Mine Management, Legislation and Safety, he is actively engaged in industrial research and consultancy projects in the areas of metal mining, both underground and surface relating to mine planning, mine design, mineral conservation and economic mining. He was intimately associated with internationally reputed consultants viz. RTZ, SELTRUST and GMA (U.K.).

Currently he is working at the IIT, Kharagpur:
-Teaching: UG-Subjects - Underground Metal Mining, Subsurface Excavation of Minerals, Surface Mining and Environment, Economics for Mineral Industry, Mine Management and Legislation for Mining Industry, Rock Mechanics Lab
- Teaching Dual Degree and PG: Subjects- Advanced Methods of Metal Mining, Surface Mine Design, Principles of Mine Planning, Economics of Mining Enterprises, Rescue and Disaster Management, Safety Engineering Lab
